Family Session Outfit Advice
What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session: A Simple & Stylish Guide
When it comes to family photos, what you wear makes a big impact — not just on how your images look, but on how you feel in them. Coordinated outfits help bring everything together and let your family's love and connection shine.
Here’s my go-to guide to help you choose outfits that are timeless, beautiful, and true to you.
👕 1. Start With Neutrals and Soft Tones
Think ivory, sage, tan, denim, dusty blue, blush, or muted earth tones. These colors work well in almost any setting — especially outdoor or natural light sessions — and keep the focus on your faces and connection.
Avoid bright neon or super saturated colors, which can be distracting or cause color casts on skin.
👗 2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans! Instead, pick a color palette of 2–3 soft shades that complement each other, and build outfits around that.
Think:
- Mom in a flowy sage dress
- Dad in tan pants and a cream shirt
- Kids in dusty rose and denim
- It feels cohesive but still gives everyone personality.
🧣 3. Add Layers & Texture
Layers add depth and movement — cardigans, light jackets, scarves, or textured fabrics like linen or lace can take your photos to the next level.
Avoid anything too bulky or stiff; we want soft movement and natural comfort.
👣 4. Don’t Forget Shoes & Accessories
Footwear matters! Opt for clean, neutral-toned shoes (no bright sneakers or crocs if possible). Accessories like bows, hats, or subtle jewelry can add a finishing touch — just keep it simple and classic.
🧍♀️ 5. Dress for Movement & Comfort
You’ll be walking, holding hands, snuggling your kids — so wear something you feel comfortable moving and sitting in. The more relaxed you feel, the more genuine your smiles will be!
👨👩👧 6. Let the Kids Be Themselves (Within Reason!)
Choose outfits they like (and are willing to wear) and make sure nothing feels itchy or stiff. Give them a little choice within your palette — it helps them feel excited and included.

✨ Remember — It’s About Your Family, Not Perfection
Don’t stress over every detail. The most important thing is to show up with love, patience, and a heart ready to make memories. Your connection is the real magic — and I’ll take care of capturing it beautifully.
