Things to Ask Your Wedding Photographer (Before You Book!)
Choosing the right photographer is so much more than falling in love with pretty photos. You’re trusting someone to capture one of the biggest days of your life — so asking the right questions upfront is key.
Here are some must-ask questions to help you feel confident and informed before saying “yes” to your photographer:
1. How many weddings have you photographed? Experience matters. You want someone who’s calm under pressure, can think fast, and knows how to adapt when things don’t go 100% to plan.
2. What’s your editing style + delivery time? Are their images light + airy, moody + dramatic, or true-to-color? Also — ask how long it takes to receive your full gallery!
3. How do you back up our images? Tech stuff matters! Ask if they use dual memory cards, external hard drives, or cloud backups. (P.S. I use multiple layers of protection — because your memories are priceless.)
4. What’s included in your wedding packages? Make sure you understand what’s included — hours of coverage, second shooter, engagement session, physical prints, USB drives, albums, etc. Look for transparency and no hidden fees.
5. Will you be the one photographing our wedding? Some studios have multiple shooters. Always clarify if you’re meeting with your actual photographer — or if they’ll assign someone else.
6. Do you offer a second shooter? Second shooters can capture angles and moments the main photographer might miss — like the groom’s face while the bride walks down the aisle. A game-changer for full coverage!
7. Can we see full wedding galleries? Highlight reels are beautiful, but full galleries show how they handle everything — from getting ready to dark reception lighting and candid moments in between.
8. What’s your cancellation/rescheduling policy? Life happens. Make sure you understand the contract’s terms around emergencies, date changes, or cancellations.
9. How do you handle low-light or bad weather situations? Weddings are unpredictable — your photographer should know how to adapt and still make your photos look amazing.
10. How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera? This one’s huge. If you’re a little camera-shy (like most people!), you want someone who gives great direction and makes you feel relaxed and natural.
Bonus: Do you help with the timeline? A good photographer helps structure your day so you get the best light, enough portrait time, and a smooth flow. It’s part of what I do for every couple I work with!
